The 32-year-old conservative leader lost his grip on power after scandal engulfed his onetime coalition partner, the far-right Freedom Party. The opposition Social Democrats and the Freedom Party both turned against Kurz in Monday's no-confidence vote. Austria is likely to be run by a technocratic administration until September, when Kurz's party is considered a favorite to triumph in fresh elections.
