World Alert: Travel ban goes into effect in Chinese city of Wuhan as authorities try to stop coronavirus spread

Wuhan health authorities ordered the suspension of buses, subways, ferries and long-distance passenger transport starting at 10 a.m. Thursday local time. The airport and main train stations have temporarily closed, and video footage showed health workers in medical suits checking temperatures of people leaving the city in vehicles. The city has a population of 11 million and is at the center of key air and rail routes. The ban comes as the virus's death toll increased to 17 and during the busiest travel period of the year in China, with 400 million people on the road for the Lunar New Year holiday, which officially starts Friday.
