World Alert: Venezuela's Maduro denies Pompeo's claim that he sought to escape to Cuba after day of clashes that left 1 dead, dozens hurt

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an earlier interview that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had planned to step down and leave the country until his ally Russia persuaded him to stay. In what U.S. officials said may be a pivotal uprising, opposition leader Juan Guaidó launched what appeared to be a military-backed challenge to Maduro. A 25-year-old man died and dozens of people were injured by rubber bullets, tear gas and live ammunition in melees across Venezuela, according to local observers and hospital officials.
