World Alert: Japan’s new emperor, Naruhito, formally takes throne a day after his father abdicates

The 59-year-old Naruhito assumed the Chrysanthemum Throne in a tradition-laden ceremony at Tokyo's Imperial Palace. His 85-year-old father Akihito stepped down to pass on the largely ceremonial duties in the first such move in Japan in 200 years. Naruhito, who has a daughter, immediately brings questions about his own heir in the male-only succession system.
