World Alert: British academic Matthew Hedges pardoned by UAE of espionage charges, released from prison (Correction)

A report from the state news agency says the pardon came in response to a letter from Hedges's family to UAE's president asking for clemency. Prior to the announcement, news agencies said UAE showed a video in which Hedges confessed to working for British intelligence. He was one of 785 prisoners pardoned ahead of UAE's national day on Dec. 2. An earlier version of this alert stated that Hedges was pardoned on UAE's national day. This has been corrected.
