Pompeo made a secret visit to North Korea over Easter weekend and met with the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, according to two people with direct knowledge of the trip. Pompeo's visit, which hasn't been previously reported, marks a dramatic advance in relations between the two countries as President Trump prepares for direct talks with Kim about North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday, Trump appeared to allude to the extraordinary face-to-face meeting between Kim and Pompeo, who is awaiting a Senate vote to become the next secretary of state, when he said the U.S. has had direct talks with North Korea "at very high levels." The president didn't elaborate, but he has said that he would sit down with Kim probably in early June, if not sooner. |
