World Alert: Germany’s main political parties agree on forming a coalition, ending four months of political deadlock

The deal between Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the Social Democrats came after a 23-hour marathon negotiating session overcame key differences in health-care and labor policy. Inconclusive elections had left Merkel weakened and a new coalition in doubt for months. Social Democratic Party members, however, will still have to vote to approve the deal.

The deal between Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the Social Democrats came after a 23-hour marathon negotiating session overcame key differences in health-care and labor policy.

Inconclusive elections had left Merkel weakened and a new coalition in doubt for months. Social Democratic Party members, however, will still have to vote to approve the deal.
