| The infantry shortage is leading to exhaustion and diminished morale, nearly a dozen soldiers and commanders in the field told The Washington Post. One battalion commander in a mechanized brigade fighting in eastern Ukraine said that his unit has fewer than 40 troops while a fully equipped battalion would have more than 200. The shortage is adding peril for Ukraine's forces as Russia has regained the offensive initiative, and as President Volodymyr Zelensky has resisted a call by his country's top general to mobilize nearly 500,000 soldiers. |
