After two weeks of talks in Glasgow, diplomats from almost 200 countries have agreed to ramp up their carbon-cutting commitments, phase out some fossil fuels and increase aid to poor countries on the front lines of climate change. The elements of the agreement would not prevent temperatures from rising more than the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels. But officials said it represents a significant step on a path to a safer future. |
