Fed Chair Jerome Powell signaled that the U.S. central bank was nowhere close to pulling back on its bond-buying support for the pandemic-damaged economy, even as he voiced expectations for a return to more normal activity later this year. He also played down concerns over inflation from another big Covid bailout or the unleashing of pent-up demand as vaccinated Americans who didn't lose their jobs start spending. "The economy is a long way from our employment and inflation goals," Powell told the Senate Banking Committee Tuesday. "And it is likely to take some time for substantial further progress to be achieved." —David E. Rovella
U.S. stocks reversed losses after Powell's comments on inflation, and his cautious outlook for growth spurred traders to buy the dip. Treasuries edged higher and Asian equities look set for a mixed start. Here's your markets wrap.
South Africa has concerns about the efficacy of the Sputnik V vaccine against a fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus first identified there. The country is also concerned about the adenovirus 5 vector used in the Russian shot, which has in previous studies appeared to make people more susceptible to HIV infection.
While many countries are loosening restrictions, others are still being battered by the latest wave of Covid-19 infections. Czech hospitals are nearing "total exhaustion" as intensive-care units fill with patients and Italy is imposing a new hard lockdown in areas close to the country's original epicenter. In the U.S., a day after it surpassed the nightmarish milestone of 500,000 confirmed deaths, some good news arrived: Johnson & Johnson said it will be ready next month to ship 20 million doses of its one-shot vaccine. Along with two-shot vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, the delivery targets through next month will be enough to fully vaccinate 130 million Americans. Here is he latest on the pandemic.
How did white supremacists and other rioting Trump followers breach the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6? The law enforcement officials responsible for the building's security blamed the Pentagon, intelligence lapses and each other during the first hearings about the unprecedented, deadly attack.

Tesla shares wiped out their year-to-date gains Tuesday and briefly traded below the level they were at when the electric-carmaker entered the S&P 500 Index in December. Guess who is partly to blame?
The suspected Russian hackers who compromised software created by SolarWinds Corp. to break into U.S. government agencies and companies used a cyber weapon "so potentially powerful it could have been crippling," said Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. The Democrat from Virginia called the assault "a level of attack and level of penetration that is much greater than what we have seen." His committee, which is holding hearings on the sprawling breach, is digging into an attack President Donald Trump refused to blame on Russia. The Biden administration, however, is reportedly preparing to punish Moscow for the hack, as well as previous cyber malfeasance and the attempted murder of Vladimir Putin's arch rival, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Alexei Navalny, having recovered from a poisoning attempt he attributed to agents of President Vladimir Putin, was arrested upon his return to Russia. He appeared at a hearing in a Moscow Feb. 12, and is currently imprisoned.

The idea of alcohol coinciding with an athlete's regimen might seem counterintuitive. But breweries have started to include electrolytes and (even buckwheat and bee pollen) to ameliorate dehydrating damage to the body. Some appeal to millennials (of course) who want to consume fewer calories. The hope is that for this new class of suds, they might just put down their hard seltzers and give the gatorades of beer a try.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell spoke in Congress today, which are words that are very boring to type. It wasn't even the day's most interesting congressional hearing. But with trillions of dollars hanging in the balance, every Powell utterance carries the weight of at least one (1) stimulus package.
And Powell did not disappoint. He was sanguine about a recent jump in long-term bond yields and didn't do anything dumb, such as hinting he'd sway one iota from giving the economy full gas, writes Brian Chappatta. Short-term interest rates haven't moved, and even long-term rates are barely above epochal lows. And they're likely forecasts of a stronger economy ahead, not some sign hyperinflation is about to travel here in a time machine from the '70s.
Inflation should in fact come back from the dead this year, but, as with slightly higher bond yields, this is just a symptom of economies springing back to life and nothing to worry about, writes Bill Dudley. It will take a long time to return the economy to full health, and longer still to build an inflationary juggernaut.
With everything this wonderful, it's the perfect time to buy stocks, you might think. Nope. It's actually the perfect time to sell them, writes Jared Dillian. This is based on the thesis that the best portfolio-management strategy is the George Costanza model: Take whatever your instinct is and do the opposite. When the going gets easy is when the smartest investors make like Costanza and flee the room.
We often compare markets to children who are prone to throw tantrums, when they are in fact populated by grown adult humans that own houses and sometimes boats. Adults do get upset when markets go down, preventing them from buying more houses and boats. But if bonds and even stocks fall on stronger growth, then that's actually a sign of maturity.

Sprechen Zie New Cold War
Yesterday we wrote about the prospects of having a fun, hip cold war for a new generation, this time with China. We also noted it would once again take strong alliances to help the U.S. win. One of America's biggest allies in Cold War I was Germany (the western bits). Unfortunately, the current version of Germany isn't eager to commit to another buddy movie, writes Hal Brands. Some of this is due to the legacy of the first cold war, which Germans think was won by charming the opposition. Some of it is also the fact that Germany simply sells a lot of stuff in China. The U.S. is going to have to be pretty charming itself if it wants to woo Berlin fully to its side.
It doesn't help America's cause that China is doing a much better job sharing its Covid vaccine with the world than Western nations are, as Lionel Laurent notes. Even Cold War I heel Russia is running circles around most of its old opponents. Part of America's charm offensive must involve matching that soft power with its own.
Life expectancy worsened dramatically in the U.S. last year, as did the lifespan gap between rich and poor and Black and White Americans, writes Peter Orszag. And you can't just blame the coronavirus and its K-shaped pandemic and recession. Much of it was people simply not going to the doctor for months on end. Just in case you weren't sure that was bad.
Even without a pandemic, millions of Americans forgo life-saving routine health care because they can't afford it. To that end, Bloomberg's editorial board writes, President Joe Biden and Congress should undo as much of the damage Donald Trump did to the Affordable Care Act as they can, as quickly as they can, and then strengthen it, so it can affordably insure more people.

Hoping to catch the next Tesla, investors bid up a Michael Klein SPAC that was buying Lucid Motors. Now that the deal has been announced and Lucid's financials are out, investors realize to their chagrin they've got the setting-all-the-cash-ablaze version of Tesla, writes Chris Bryant.

Welcome to the evening edition of the Daily Digest
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has to do more than just announce the extension of the lockdown this evening. In his address to the nation, he also has to seek to restore the sense of solidarity that was there during the early stages of the pandemic, but now appears to be lost. A combination of lockdown tedium, frustration and confusion has resulted in a growing loss of faith in the Government's ability to properly manage the response to the Covid-19 crisis. The latest batch of botched communications certainly hasn't helped the situation.
Here's a selection of the best Covid-19 coverage you can trust from Independent.ie, Ireland and across the world.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly managed to cause confusion, where it wasn't needed, around the opening of schools. Labour Party leader Alan Kelly says there is a "serious issue" of a lack of confidence in the Health Minister. Mr Kelly declined to say if Labour would table a motion of no confidence.
Sunny days
In the space of a week, the weather has gone from snowy to sunny to stormy. Caroline O'Doherty explains what's going on as Met Éireann says finer weather is ahead in the next few days, and its monthly forecast, indicates the weeks to come will see a return to more normal weather patterns. (Premium)
Outdoor dining
It's good to see the weather back to normal. For a moment there on Sunday, we got notions. Looking ahead to the outdoor dining now being predicted for the summer, a Galway coffee shop is cheekily showing what it will be like.
Solid support
The sense of solidarity of 11 months ago seems to be gone in the battle against Covid-19. Stella O'Malley charts the point at which we all lost hope, what went wrong and says it's time for Government to start treating the public with the respect we deserve.(Premium)
Scotland the brave
Scotland is declaring its independence from England in the relaxation of restriction. Scotland's economy will begin a "phased reopening" from the last week of April, as the country moves to a regional level system of coronavirus restrictions. England will move together as a whole.
The death toll from Covid-19 has passed 500,000 in the US. Now Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says the United States did worse than most countries in handling the virus and the mass tragedy was avoidable.
Vitamin D solutions
A group of health experts want the role of vitamin D supplements in fighting illness from Covid-19 to be recognised. The Oireachtas Committee on Health was told there is now an extensive body of international research showing the protective role of vitamin D against Covid-19.
Fighting the virus
Doctors in China have been using probiotics alongside other Covid-19 treatments since the pandemic began. Now the debate is taking off elsewhere, in countries such as Canada, about their use and that of Vitamin D to help prevent some of the virus's most damaging symptoms.
Flat earther
In a rapidly changing world, José Mourinho is paying a heavy price for what is either a stubborn unwillingness or, more alarmingly, an inability to adapt, says Roy Curtis. Next to the modish doctrines peddled by Pep Guardiola and others, Jose appears like a flat-earther, a climate-change denier.(Premium)

The United States has crossed the staggering milestone of 500,000 COVID-19 deaths just over a year since the pandemic claimed its first known victim in Santa Clara County, California.
In a proclamation honoring the dead, President Joe Biden ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff on public buildings and grounds until sunset on Friday.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will appear in Congress today to provide lawmakers an update on an economy still reeling from the pandemic but perhaps poised to take off later this year if the U.S. vaccination program hits its stride.

It is a number that is almost impossible to process. Half a million Americans are dead. The number of people who died in World War II was eclipsed by the pandemic in January.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans were left alone to mourn their mothers, fathers, wives, and husbands. Many had to say their last farewells by FaceTime or Facebook — or not at all.
In its response to the pandemic, America faltered. Authorities bickered, descending into fights over "lockdowns" and "reopening". A high-tech and wealthy nation that should have been well placed to limit the spread of a deadly virus was ultimately found lacking.
Meanwhile, the pandemic exposed the fault lines and rampant inequality in American society. It has disproportionately killed older adults, those already sick, people with low incomes, and people of color. Millions lost their jobs and were left with little means of support.
Through it all, the poor got poorer, the already fabulously rich got richer, and the bodies piled up.

Merrick Garland pledged to investigate the Capitol insurrection from the rioters on "up" as attorney general
Judge Merrick Garland testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of the process of being confirmed as attorney general. Garland pledged that if he is confirmed to the role, he'll give career prosecutors all resources "they could possibly require" and follow all leads "wherever they take us."
You've heard Garland's name before. The judge was former president Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee in 2016. Top Republicans, who controlled the Senate at the time, refused to act on his nomination and argued that the vacancy should be kept open until after the presidential election that fall.

REWRITING THE NARRATIVE
The new Woody Allen documentary is a nuanced reckoning
This past Sunday, HBO premiered Allen v Farrow, a new documentary miniseries that revisits the sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen and how those allegations were framed when they first emerged in the 1990s.
At the time, Alessa Dominguez points out, the allegations "were not the main story; they were a subplot in the contentious breakup narrative" in the aftermath of Allen's split from Mia Farrow and his romantic relationship with her then-21-year-old adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn.
Dominguez writes about how the new documentary series — one of a number of recent series critically revisiting the way '90s media and the court system treated claims of sexual abuse — is "a reclamation of the stories from Mia and Dylan, an examination of the court cases against Allen, and a reckoning with the gendered biases of the judiciary and media."
KATE SPEAKS OUT
Kate Winslet reflected on the public scrutiny of her body after Titanic was released
The actor looked back at the attention she received for her breakout role when she was just 22.
In a recent interview with the Guardian, Winslet said that after the smashing success of the movie, "In my twenties, people would talk about my weight a lot." As a result, "I would be called to comment on my physical self."

1. Soignez votre profil 2. Calculez votre apport 3. Remboursez les crédits en cours 4. Optez pour la délégation d'assurance emprunteur 5. Pensez au regroupement

Fellow American,
One of our greatest challenges is growing our movement and recruiting young people to the cause of liberty. I'm afraid that if we fail to act quickly and recruit younger pro-liberty leaders, our movement is destined to fail…
Fortunately, I believe Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) is solving this problem.
My name is Sean Themea… I was once an Obama supporter (please forgive me), but now am a hardcore Constitutionalist and serve as the leader of Young Americans for Liberty, the nation's largest and most active pro-liberty student organization.
Let me tell you my story… and how YAL is converting THOUSANDS of apathetic, independent, and even left-wing students into hardcore pro-liberty activists.
In 2012, I was living in New Hampshire and supported President Obama. I started drifting away from the Democratic Party when I realized how their agenda was destroying our economy and adding TRILLIONS to the national debt.
I also started listening a little closer to just how radical some of my college professors' ideas were, and grew disillusioned with their insistence that the American dream was dead...
Fortunately, there was a group on campus presenting alternatives to the siren song of socialism. YAL student leaders relentlessly tried to recruit me to their student organization, and I finally decided to check it out. All of a sudden, I was learning about free markets, the Constitution, the Founding Fathers, our Second Amendment rights, and civil liberties.
I was inspired. I now knew that liberty was the answer. And I knew that if I didn't take a stand for what I believed in, I would regret it.
That's when everything changed. I went all-in, and decided to commit my life's work to fighting for principles of liberty and restoring our Republic. And YAL was there for me every step of the way.
My story is like so many others. That's why, this year, Young Americans for Liberty is launching Project 1776:YAL's plan to recruit 100,000 new pro-liberty students to the ideas of liberty on college campuses across the country. This effort is DESPERATELY needed if we wish to grow our movement and restore our Republic!
How will Young Americans for Liberty recruit 100,000 students to the ideas of liberty on college campuses? Great question!
YAL recruits students by hosting debates, "tabling" in student unions or courtyards and talking with students, encouraging students to stand up for their Second Amendment rights, fighting back against unconstitutional free speech codes, and more.
It's no secret the radical left attempts to silence pro-liberty voices on college campuses… Fortunately, YAL has repealed 71 unconstitutional free speech codes on campuses across the country and is empowering our side to fight back!
Let me be as direct as possible: YAL is the most effective organization leading the fight to recruit young pro-liberty students and fight socialism in our college education system.
This is not a normal email I am sending you.
This is not a fundraising email for a candidate, election, or me trying to sell you car insurance.
No, I am emailing you because I believe in this cause, care deeply about the future of our Republic, and am determined to convert 100,000 students to our cause.
I am excited to share one of YAL's most generous supporters is MATCHING all online donations… This means your gift is effectively DOUBLED if you donate right away. Please consider making a donation today.
If you're anything like me you love this country… You want to fight back… You love the principles of liberty and the ideas of our Founding Fathers. I hope you'll consider making a donation today so we can ultimately defeat socialism.
P.S. Here is a photo with me standing next to Rand Paul. In 2012 I was an Obama supporter… In 2016, I proudly helped Senator Paul open a campaign office.
How did a Obama supporter convert to become a hardcore pro-liberty leader? Because of Young Americans for Liberty.
