The building was erected nearly 1,500 years ago as a Byzantine Christian cathedral, and Western governments and Christians have vehemently objected to a push by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to change its current status as a museum. Conservative Muslims and Turkish nationalists have long pushed to reintroduce worship at Hagia Sophia, which has also been an Ottoman mosque and whose grand dome, minarets and rust-colored walls draw millions of visitors every year. |
