World Alert: Japan to declare state of emergency to cover Tokyo, Osaka and other areas severely affected by coronavirus

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he will declare a state of emergency on Tuesday for seven prefectures, along with an economic rescue package equivalent to around 20 percent of gross domestic product. People will be asked to stay indoors, but no legal penalties will be imposed for non-compliance. Companies will be asked to tell employees to work from home, and schools may be closed, but trains will continue to run and supermarkets will stay open.
