World Alert: Gibraltar releases Iranian supertanker despite U.S. plea

Authorities in the British territory said Thursday they would release the Grace 1 oil tanker after receiving assurances that the vessel would not transport its cargo to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. The decision came just hours after Gibraltar said the U.S. Justice Department had applied to seize the tanker in a surprise move. Grace 1 was first detained in July and was carrying 2.1 million barrels of light crude oil.
