World Alert: Alejandro Giammattei, former head of Guatemala’s prison system, wins presidential runoff election

Migration was a central issue in the election. Pressured by President Trump, outgoing Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales agreed to a deal designating the Central American nation as a safe third country. Migrants who may have hoped to apply for asylum in the United States would be directed to seek protection there instead. Candidates Sandra Torres and Alejandro Giammattei both spoke critically of the agreement, but neither rejected it outright.
