The Amazon is becoming a desert

TicToc Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, TicToc readers! End the day smarter with our Thursday debrief:

But first...

The crushing loss of biodiversity

What's happening? The Brazilian government is pushing back against global criticism of its environmental policies as a record number of fires rip through the Amazon rainforest.

How? Environment Minister Ricardo Salles announced the creation of an Amazon task force of police, armed forces, indigenous, farming and mining groups in response to "a growing deterioration of Brazil's preservationist image."

But also, Bolsonaro's senior foreign policy adviser Filipe G. Martins criticized the media's "irresponsible disregard for basic data" and defended Brazil's record on deforestation.

What Bolsonaro said: A day after he had baselessly accused foreign NGOs of lighting fires, he suggested Brazil can't afford to fight them: "There aren't the resources. The chaos has arrived."

What are the potential impacts? Deforestation has already killed off 20% of the Amazon, and the fires during its dry season could spell catastrophe for its rich biodiversity: "We're losing species we don't even know exist," said a representative from Greenpeace Brasil.

Highly quotable

"Returning to nature." The first divers in 14 years to reach the site of wreckage from the Titanic found something shocking: It's rapidly decaying due to more than a century's worth of salt corrosion and metal-eating bacteria.

"Coordinate influence operations." Google said it disabled 210 YouTube channels this week that spread disinformation about the Hong Kong protests, following similar moves by Facebook and Twitter.

"Something clever." French President Emmanuel Macron echoed Angela Merkel's 30-day Brexit challenge for U.K. PM Boris Johnson to find a way forward on the Irish border question, describing the backstop as "indispensable."

$ignificant figures

$16.3 trillion. The cost of Bernie Sanders's newly unveiled climate change plan that calls for the U.S. to reach 100% renewable energy for electricity and transportation by 2030.

$120 million: How much Eminem's music publisher is seeking in a lawsuit against Spotify over copyright infringement for allegedly streaming hundreds of the rapper's songs billions of times without a license.

20 hours: The duration of test flights Qantas Airways will run to Sydney from New York and London to see how the human body holds up before commercial flights start.

Wait, what?

Pepe for the people. If you ask the Anti-Defamation League, Pepe the frog is a hate symbol. But in Hong Kong, the alt-right cartoon has emerged as an unofficial mascot, standing in as an anti-authoritarian icon.

No more rate cuts

Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Evening Briefing
Bloomberg

Wall Street already put its money on another interest rate cut this year, maybe even a big one. It's a gambit that's looking less certain though. Three Federal Reserve policy makers said they don't think the U.S. economy needs lower interest rates, pushing back against a White House scrambling for ways to stave off a recession many see coming. Whether this growing sense of caution presages a smaller cut, or none at all, is a question that won't be answered until next month. —David E. Rovella

Here are today's top stories

The skeptical folks at the Fed may be onto something. A recession isn't anywhere near a sure thing, despite the inverted yield curve and its status as the fifth horseman of the apocalypse. Indeed, Peter Coy writes in Bloomberg Businessweek that it's not the powerful augur it once was.

Senator Bernie Sanders proposed a Green New Deal on steroids, a
$16.3 trillion framework for transforming America into a country that runs on renewable energy rather than planet-killing fossil fuel. It would require the government to build and run a massive new energy network.

Brazil's anti-environmentalist President Jair Bolsonaro has bragged how he will accelerate deforestation of the Amazon. Now that huge swaths of it are burning and global condemnation is raining down on him, the right wing leader's government is doubling down, blaming the media and attempting damage control—all at the same time.

Hong Kong's democracy movement is flourishing online, and China can't do anything about it.

Foreign oil companies are fleeing Canada thanks to persistent pipeline delays, among other things. Divestitures are up to $30 billion.

Apple has some new hardware, such as its "Pro" iPhones, iPad upgrades and its largest laptop in years.

What's Lorcan Roche Kelly thinking? The Bloomberg cross-asset reporter observes that on one side of the Atlantic we have the big shots of global monetary policy meeting at Jackson Hole. On the other side we have holders of the fiscal levers gathering at the G-7 in France. His prediction? Both will look to the other to solve the world's problems.

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released their engagement photos to the public in 2017, the future Duchess of Sussex's long-sleeved gown with a sheer top and tulle skirt sparked an instant controversy. Wanted: A Steady Hand for This Economy

Today's Agenda

When Doves Cry

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is in a pickle. Economists are warning that it's dangerous for the Fed to further cut U.S. interest rates when there are few blaring signs of U.S. economic weakness. But financial market participants — and the American president — are jawboning Powell for more rate reductions to juice economic growth. It's awkward.

Jim Bianco sides with the market, and says Powell should "do nothing less than signal that a more aggressive approach to easier monetary policy is warranted." There's no use waiting for a recession, Jim says, to deploy the Fed's recession-fighting weapons.

The Fed's response to itchiness for rate cuts, Brian Chappatta writes, was to

release the hawks — that is, to trot out Fed officials skeptical about further rate cuts to say so OUT LOUD. These words did the trick in ratcheting back bond traders' expectations of rate cuts this year. For now. Powell's speech scheduled for Friday at a central banking conference will be closely watched.

Bloomberg's editorial board writes that Powell should say less. Market analysts sometimes seem determined to misunderstand what Powell and his Fed colleagues say, but investors are also confused partly because the Fed itself seems confused about an unpredictable economy, the editorial board writes. Rather than express confidence in future rate adjustments and then backtrack, Powell may be better off waiting for the data.

Related economics reading:

Tony Soprano Doesn't Get Along With the Phone Company

You may have heard that AT&T Inc. recently bought the company behind the Bugs Bunny cartoons, HBO, the "Friends" television series, CNN, and the "Wizard of Oz." In theory, Tara Lachapelle writes, AT&T's collection of entertainment assets and its communications expertise prime it to sign up lots of people to Netflix-like streaming video services. But it turns out that the new AT&T employees aren't all getting along with their bosses, and AT&T is acting with the finesse of a phone company in rolling out a tangle of web entertainment options.

All you need to know, really, is this:

In other corporate reading:

  • Investors who bet against companies have an important role, but a short seller and his allies flogged a misguided narrative about the maker of a wound-graft product. —Joe Nocera, in the second of two columns

Pray.

It's has been a strange week in the White House, even for a presidential administration that has taken the bar for weird and raised it to the moon. It emerged this week that Trump toyed with purchasing Greenland, flip-flopped on gun control and potential tax cuts, tweeted a conspiracy theorist's comparison of Trump to the Messiah, and briefly looked up to the heavens to declare himself the "chosen one."

This behavior is not unusual, says Tim O'Brien. It's the same Trump the world has seen for decades with, Tim suspects, "a big dollop of something new blended in: unbridled and unmanageable panic."

Tim's years of writing about Trump have led him to believe that the president views faith as an insurance policy and, more recently, a way to get evangelical Christians to vote for him. As the 2020 election approaches and the president's biggest selling point — the strong U.S. economy — is flashing warning signs, Tim says Trump is more and more willing to play on faith.

In further reading:

  • Trump's recent comments that Jews who vote for Democrats display "great disloyalty" are distinct from the typical nativist claims that Jews are more aligned with Israel than the U.S. That's no excuse for questioning the loyalty of Jewish Democrats to Israel, however, and it's wrong to suggest Jewish Americans should vote as a single bloc. —Eli Lake

It's in the Genes

An ambitious program from the National Institutes of Health aims to collect genetic information from at least 1 million Americans, make the data broadly available to researchers, and harness it to provide genetic counseling for participants. Such a large-scale project raises understandable privacy concerns and requires strict safeguards, Max Nisen writes, but the program's potential to improve health across a wide swath of the population makes it "an initiative worth rallying around."

Telltale Charts

Investors got excited about Nordstrom Inc. on Thursday, but Sarah Halzack says the retailer's better-than-expected earnings won't help it ward off the curse of the department store

Swire Group, the parent company of Cathay Pacific Airways, is a relic of Hong Kong's colonial legacy. A shift to leaders who reflect the company's Asian future may be the best way to repair relations with Beijing, says David Fickling.

BREAKING NEWS: White House backs off foreign aid cuts

Posted: 22 Aug 2019 10:17 AM PDT

The White House will not move forward with a multi-billion dollar proposal to cut foreign aid, according to multiple sources.

Lawmakers from both parties objected to the plan, complaining that it would hurt foreign aid programs while also jeopardizing the massive budget deal reached in July.

The Iranian Ship Scuffle Is a Sideshow (Henderson | The Hill)

THE U.S.-IRANIAN SCUFFLE OVER A SHIP IS A SIDESHOW TO EVENTS IN THE GULF
by Simon Henderson

The Hill
August 22, 2019

Thus far, Britain's willingness to stand firm in the Persian Gulf has been more consequential than Washington's legal challenge in the Mediterranean Sea.

The first act has ended, and the second act is about to begin. But a lot is going on backstage during the intermission in the legal drama involving an Iranian oil tanker, now renamed the Adrian Darya 1. The tanker was held in the British territory of Gibraltar from July 4 until last week because its oil was destined for an embargoed Syria. Now it is moving towards Greece, and Washington has warned Athens against assisting the tanker in anyway. There appear to be two likely outcomes: Either Iran’s economic and political isolation is increased, or Washington’s sanctions policy suffers an embarrassing setback...

Help me defeat AOC

The following is a message from one of our advertisers. This message does not represent the opinion of The Washington Times.

John Cummings

Fellow Patriot,

I'm a retired NYPD Cop and high school civics teacher from the Bronx and I was just on Fox and Friends announcing my run for Congress against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In life we can talk about changing things or we can do something about it. I'm going to do something and stand up against socialism by running!

You know, I never in my lifetime thought I'd have to fight socialism here in the United States. I mean, we fought the Cold War to stop these guys!

Then, AOC was elected to be my Congresswoman. And oh my God, I couldn't believe what she did.

AOC

Did you hear about her "Green New Deal"?

This brilliant plan would cost $20 trillion, all on the government's tab, and prevent you from boarding a plane or having meat or dairy from a cow.

Then she chased away Amazon, who was about to build a huge new project in the district. That project represented jobs and stability for many of my neighbors. It would have changed everything.

But she chased it away. Said those jobs were unwelcome.

Those were my neighbors that she was harming with her "democratic socialism"!

Unlike AOC, I was born and raised in my district. I followed in my father's footsteps and joined the NYPD. I worked in the South Bronx and then moved to the NYPD's Harbor Unit. I retired in 1991, went back to school and joined the faculty at my alma mater, Saint Raymond High School for Boys, just blocks from where I grew up on Metropolitan Avenue in Parkchester.

John Cummings

I'm as New York as it gets. I'm not some astroturf academic socialist, who never made a buck or created a job. I'm real, and I've lived the American Dream.

I've served my neighbors with distinction. I respect them, and want the best for them.

And I will bring all of this experience to Congress, but first we need to win.

This campaign is going to be about liberty vs. socialism. It's going to be about the American Dream.

Can you imagine a world where AOC is not in Congress pushing her socialist agenda? Yeah.. that's a pretty great dream.

We had that just two years ago. We can have it again.

So it's simple, AOC can be beat but not without help from around the country. I need to know that freedom-loving Americans like you are with me. With your help, we have a real shot.

AOC is deeply disliked, here in her own district. We resent her, not just for abandoning her district, but for taking away jobs that were right here to be had.

We resent her for thinking that being a twitter celeb is more important than representing us.

She will have every leftist looney wacko in the country donating to her. That's why I need you.

Please donate right now to give our campaign the resources we need to take on AOC.

Stand with me as I take a stand against socialism.

Thank you,

John Cummings
