Politics Alert: Trump aides look into U.S. acquiring Greenland after president's repeated directives

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 06:01 PM PDT

President Trump has pushed top aides to investigate whether the U.S. government can purchase the giant, ice-smothered island of Greenland, two people with direct knowledge of the directive said. The presidential request has bewildered aides, some of whom continue to believe it isn't serious, but Trump has mentioned it for weeks. As with many of Trump's internal musings, aides haven't told him the idea is preposterous and instead are waiting for more direction before they decide how seriously they should look into it.

Israel’s own travel ban

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 04:56 PM PDT

TicToc Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, TicToc readers! Start tomorrow smarter with your Thursday debrief:

But first...

Trump smears, Israel blocks

In an unprecedented move, Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu officially barred U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar from visiting the country during an upcoming congressional delegation visit. Shortly before, Trump tweeted.

What he said: "It would show great weakness" if Israel allowed them to visit. "They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds."

How Israel responded: Israel "is open to all visitors and all criticism," Netanyahu said, but "it became clear that they are planning a trip whose sole purpose was strengthening the boycott and negating the legitimacy of Israel."

What Democrats said: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi characterized it as "a sign of weakness and beneath the dignity" of Israel.

How Palestine reacted:  PLO senior official Hanan Ashrawi said Israel is "behaving like a typical dictatorship."

What the rest of Squad said: Rep. Ayanna Pressley called it "bigoted, short-sighted and cruel," and AOC said it "harms international diplomacy," and she won't visit "until all members of Congress are allowed."

Highly quotable

"Steal on the high seas." How Iran responded to U.S. attempts to detain an oil tanker that appeared to violate EU sanctions. Gibraltar released it

"Some serious thought." John Hickenlooper quit the 2020 race and said he's mulling a Senate run instead.

"Our officers need help:" The mayor of Philadelphia called for more gun control after a shootout left six officers injured.

$ignificant figures

35% chance: The likelihood of a U.S. economic recession within the next year, according to a survey of economists.

60.4° F: Earth's average temperature during the month of July, the hottest month recorded since records began in 1880.

23: How many people were injured when Russian passenger jet collided with a flock of birds and made an emergency landing.

What's good

Even masters have to start over. A series of sketches and handprints by Leonardo da Vinci that were hidden underneath "The Virgin of the Rocks," have been revealed for the first time in more than 500 years. The drawings show the original composition he started and then abandoned before he painted the final work.

Big storms are brewing

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 03:20 PM PDT

Evening Briefing
Bloomberg

It may be the summer high season, filled with vacations, beach outings and barbecues, but it's also a popular time of year for natural disasters. Specifically, hurricanes. Sure, it's been a bit of a cyclonic yawn in the Atlantic so far, but don't be fooled: The next six weeks are regularly the most dangerous and active time for storms to develop. —David E. Rovella

Here are today's top stories

Following yesterday's nightmare on Wall Street, U.S. stocks finished the day higher after a volatile session. Treasury yields, however, plummeted to levels unseen in years. Soothsayers have been warning for awhile now that a recession is just around the corner. Investors are worried that they may finally be right.

The death of Jeffrey Epstein—with questions flying over whether guards were checking on him and the removal of his suicide watch—just got much darker. The Justice Department quickly labeled the alleged sex trafficker's death in federal custody as an apparent suicide, but a broken bone found in Epstein's neck may be more in line with homicide.

U.S. President Donald Trump told Israel it should bar two Muslim Congresswoman from visiting. The women were two of the four Trump has attacked with language widely criticized as racist. Israel decided to bar the representatives, despite a statement last month by its ambassador that no members of Congress would be kept out. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Israel's decision "is a sign of weakness." Eli Lake, in Bloomberg Opinion, had something similar to say.

Since the American Civil War, farmers have been turning the desert green with Colorado River water. Now they're making hundreds of millions of dollars off of city folks who want some of the water, too. The problem is that agricultural communities have been using too much of it. More than a century of overuse, combined with climate change, is bringing a reckoning to the Southwest, and maybe to the rest of the country.

Back in March 1979, America flirted with its own Chernobyl. Three Mile Island came close to being a full-blown cataclysm. Instead, it turned the nation against nuclear energy. Now the notorious complex is closing—just as some say it still has a role to play in the battle against global warming.

Pricey gym chain Equinox is struggling to smother a growing brushfire as members quit over its association with billionaire real estate magnate Stephen Ross, a fundraiser for Trump. Other fitness companies, like cycling chain Flywheel, have a more mundane problem: competition.

What's Joe Weisenthal thinking about? The Bloomberg news director said he's trying to figure out why so many people have it in for meat-alternative superstar Beyond Meat. Sure, the stock is pricey and it still loses money. But Joe thinks all the haters are using the company as a political target, since it's the earth-friendly answer to industrial meat makers who feed climate change. And, Joe says, eating meat is apparently associated with manliness, so that may be part of it, too.

Golf Ball Market Disruption Is in Full, Er, Swing

Unless you're developing a fertilizer, you probably don't expect to disrupt the golf industry from the spare room of a sewage company. But that's where Dean Snell found himself four years ago, holed up in an office with a single computer. "In the mornings, we were walking past the trucks that pump out the port-a-johns," he says with a laugh. Now he's part of a massive disruption of the $420 million golf ball market.

General Electric has a credibility problem

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Bloomberg Opinion Today
Bloomberg

Today's Agenda

Stop Hitting Yourself, General Electric

Back in June of 2018, when General Electric Co. was tossed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, capping a string of indignities that had gutted the former corporate American icon, this newsletter suggested it might be a blessing: "Getting tossed from that weird, exclusive club is often a sign the worst is over," we wrote.

Shockingly, despite this newsletter's usually godlike powers of prognostication, this call has not aged well! The stock collapsed last fall. It rebounded this year, but then re-collapsed today, falling 15% at one point, its worst sell-off in four years. The trigger was a report from Harry Markopolos, the guy who took down Bernie Madoff, claiming GE is a big old fraud hiding $38 billion in red ink. Markopolos is working with a short-seller; GE denies his claims; and Brooke Sutherland has read his report and isn't impressed.

Still, Brooke writes, GE has exposed itself to such charges with an investor-relations approach about as easy to follow as a David Lynch plotline. The company keeps having to clear up "confusion" created by errors or murky bits of its presentations, which are heavily stage-managed even on their best days. "GE has surrendered the high ground in its defense," Brooke writes. The worst will not be over for GE until this changes.

More Trouble With the Yield Curve

Like somebody recovering from a stomach bug, the stock market spent the day after its worst sell-off of the year on edge, feeling queasy one minute and OK the next. Interest rates drove these swings; when they swooned, stocks did too. Investors are still anxious about the implications of the "inversion" of part of the "yield curve" — two-year Treasury yields rising briefly above those of 10-year yields, a closely watched recession indicator. Some say the bond market is so wacky and bubbly that it's different this time, words known for being famous last ones. But John Authers notes it's different every time, and the differences this time aren't necessarily encouraging for the economy.

Tim Duy is hopeful that, by paying attention to the yield curve and attacking it early, the Federal Reserve can make it truly different this time, by averting a downturn altogether. Otherwise, we'll have a recession on our hands, for which President Donald Trump will almost certainly fault Fed Chairman Jay Powell. But Barry Ritholtz writes Trump has only himself to blame (and not, as the Wall Street Journal claims, Peter Navarro). Presidents usually get too much criticism or credit for growth on their watch, but Trump's mismanaged trade war has hobbled an otherwise fine economy.

Further Recession-Watch Reading:

The Trade-War Tables Have Turned

Perhaps grasping the political peril he's put himself in by tossing gasoline on the economy and waving a match at it, Trump has lately tried to dial back on trade hostilities. Last night he used Hong Kong's unrest as a chance to praise Xi Jinping, perhaps a little too enthusiastically. China responded by threatening retaliation for Trump's latest tariffs and telling him he could keep his Hong Kong advice. Early in the trade war, when China's economy was already reeling from lending curbs, Trump may have had an edge on Xi, writes Shuli Ren. Now that China has adjusted to the economic pain, it can afford to play it cool, while Trump is starting to panic.

Gary Shilling disagrees; he thinks the U.S. will still win the trade war, given how desperately China needs Western investment to become a developed nation.

Further China Reading: Hong Kong's wealthy are backing the government over protesters, but risk making themselves new targets of popular ire. – Nisha Gopalan

No-Deal Brexit Keeps Winning Votes

Most British politicians say they want to avoid a no-deal Brexit. But come voting time, they keep dismissing options to avoid it, notes Therese Raphael. Theresa May could write you a book about that. Now politicians of various stripes have trashed a Jeremy Corbyn proposal to lead a caretaker government that would delay Brexit and call a general election. This plan may have been a doomed stunt from the start, but it's another step closer to a disastrous no-deal Brexit.

The U.K. is almost certainly not prepared for the disruption and pain this would cause. Several companies claim they're ready, notes Lionel Laurent; but their ability to withstand the country's broader economic pain is still in doubt.

The decision came just hours after Gibraltar said the U.S. Justice Department had applied to seize the tanker in a surprise move. Grace 1 was first detained in July and was carrying 2.1 million barrels of light crude oil.
