News Alert: Mexico aims to avoid tariffs with potential deal that stems migrant travel, allows U.S. to deport Central American asylum seekers

Faced with President Trump's threat to impose escalating tariffs on Mexican goods beginning Monday, Mexican officials have pledged to deploy up to 6,000 National Guard troops to the country's border region with Guatemala, a move aimed at making immediate reductions in the number of Central Americans heading north. The deal would give the United States authority to deport asylum seekers from Honduras and El Salvador to Guatemala — the first foreign country they set foot upon as they head north — and asylum seekers from Guatemala to Mexico.
