World Alert: Egyptian lawmakers pass constitutional amendments to allow Sissi to remain president until 2030

The amendments, which were widely expected to pass, now go to a national referendum. The moves come eight years after the Arab Spring uprising that many had hoped would consolidate democratic rule in Egypt and shortly after autocratic leaders in Algeria and Sudan were ousted by popular rebellions.
