George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States and father of the 43rd, was a steadfast and masterful force on the international stage. The last World War II veteran to serve as president, he came to be seen as a consummate public servant and statesman. But as the U.S. economy faltered, he lost his 1992 bid for a second presidential term.
