Rajoy, who has led Spain since 2011, saw his parliamentary support diminished after his party was fined and its former treasurer was among 28 people sentenced to prison for operating a slush fund. Rajoy had testified that such a fund did not exist. The opposition Socialist Party called a no-confidence vote and won Friday with the support of a far-left party and Basque and Catalan nationalists. It was the first successful no-confidence vote in Spain's history. Socialist Pedro Sánchez will now become the country's prime minister. |
