The Syrians have been shielded from deportation since 2016 under a humanitarian program known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, which the Trump administration has ended in recent months for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Latin American nations. With war still raging in Syria, administration officials elected to extend the Syrians' permits for 18 months. But in announcing the decision Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security said it will not accept new TPS applicants from Syria, leaving anyone who reached the United States after August 2016 vulnerable to deportation to one of the world's most dangerous places. |
